16th Annual Mid-Level Managers’ Symposium
Maximizing Your Success
in Uncharted Territory
Friday, October 15, 2010

Hilton New York • 1335 Avenue of the Americas • New York, NY 10019-6078

Any move up the corporate ladder puts one in uncharted territory. But as businesses recover and regenerate after challenging economic times, we will find ourselves in new and ever-shifting business environments. Change is a constant in a shifting workplace and is entrench in business. The workplace is no longer primarily dependent upon workers with strong technical skills, but on leaders who possess creativity, awareness, and cultural adeptness. The current workplace requires leadership proficiency at every level of an organization. To successfully navigate a variety of business situations, managers have to think and act differently. They must think and be prepared to act beyond their current responsibilities. Opportunities for growth and development will be ample for those who know how to seize them. The 16th Annual Mid-Level Managers’ Symposium will coach participants in making the most of change—developing skills of flexibility and innovation in order to deliver results and advance within a business world in flux.

The MLMS helps participants understand:
- that the future is going to be quite different and that mid-level managers have to be prepared;
- that the economy is changing and so is the definition of success;
- how to be more strategic in managing their careers;
- how to acquire new skills;
- how to discover points where they can consider doing things differently;
- how to take a multidimensional view of one’s career and the steps that can be taken to enhance it
This year’s symposium is a one-day professional development seminar designed to help ambitious mid-level managers consider ways to advance their careers. In addition to the Keynote Speaker and ELC Panel, the symposium will also feature five critical areas of development mid-level managers need to examine in the current business landscape:
- The Ultimate Acts of Leadership
All too many high-potential managers find themselves at some point on a plateau, unsure of how to reenergize their careers and continue climbing upward. This session combines a practical approach to continuous learning with a research-based development foundation to help participants identify and avoid the pitfalls that can prevent accomplished professionals—especially women and professionals of color—from losing their passion and momentum just when they should be leading and leveraging others.
- Interviewing Up the Pipeline: Your Next Promotion or Opportunity
Whether you are interviewing for a promotion or assuming new responsibility, how you present yourself to the organization matters. How will you make yourself stand out, convincing your organization that you have something unique to offer? This session will introduce participants to some pragmatic approaches to presenting themselves in a positive light for a positive outcome.
- Innovation Principles to Catapult Your Organization and Career Path
Innovation is the responsibility of every leader at every level in the organization. Innovation is a derivative of necessity and change, and thus innovation is a core component to successful leadership. Regardless of whether you are trying to develop a new product or process, every successful manager must incorporate a practice of innovation into his or her leadership repertoire. This session will inspire participants to bring innovation to every aspect of their careers.
- How to Thrive Through a Reorganization
Reorganizations undoubtedly create stress for middle management, but they may also present opportunities for you and your organization to unlock new potential. Roles shift and responsibilities change, so it’s encouraged to see this transition as an opportunity to step up. Have you adapted your knowledge, skills, and abilities to keep pace with the way reorganizations, including mergers and acquisitions, happen in the new organizational landscape?
- Practicing the Art of Negotiation—For Better or For Worse
Enhancing your career performance is sometimes a matter of being able to gain concessions without damaging relationships. This interactive decision-making experience is designed to assist middle managers in the art of negotiating and understanding the fundamental elements of its craft. The session focuses on how to work through mission-critical choices when success is demanded and failure is not an option.
Who should attend:
- All mid-level managers aspiring to the next level of leadership within their organizations.
- Those with at least five years management experience in a corporate or business setting.
